HBO has had success with Latin audiences with their production of CAPADOCIA, a daring 2 part series about the lives of women in the Mexican penal system. It goes far beyond enacting the drama that one would expect between women who live in close quarters and the potential power play between them. It is more of a treatise about the living conditions of these women, their struggles, the injustices they suffer, the bias in Mexican society towards women in general and the unforgiving, often tragic circumstances that land them in the penal system to begin with.
The drama is set in Mexico City and follows the lives of a handful of inmates at a prison for women. We also meet those that that are involved in their lives and the motives behind their involvement with the women. Politicians, activists, prison guards, business executives, swat team commanders, and drug dealers are all intertwined in a web of lies and deceit. And even though the victims of the violence and corruption are the inmates, they often have a hand in the suffering that is inflicted upon them.
The message and themes in the series are clear. What is not always clear is the morality of the characters involved. It is not a black and white, good against evil narrative. And often the audience will find themselves sympathizing with the so called bad guys and condemning the actions of the so called good guys.
With a stellar soundtrack, great cast, and action packed drama, Capadocia will captivate you from the get go. You can watch the first season here. The episodes are subtitled in English.
