There is definitely a shortage of series and films with lesbian themes when compared to the sheer amount of material that had been produced for television and theaters in the past 60 or so years. Yet it has come as a pleasant surprise that in the decade starting in 2000, there has been a rise of lesbian themes in both show and film. This is a world wide phenomena and quite a number of works have come out of Europe and the Latin world. Lesbian seems to be trending at the moment and it doesn't look like the world's love affair with lesbians onscreen is going to end anytime soon.
It may even turn into somewhat of a gimmick [It seems that it already has] for writers to include scenes of girls lip locking to increase ratings on shows that do not, and will not, carry a lesbian character or story line. Celebrities are already making out every chance they get on award shows! Ok. So maybe I am exaggerating just a bit, but really, how many public girl on girl celeb smooches have we seen in the last couple of years?
Anyway, I was inspired to compile a list of my preferred lesbian themed series and films. I thought it would be short but managed to come up with a sizable one. I am sure I am missing a couple that I cannot remember off the top of my head, but then again I can always update later.
